  1. About M. Sc. in Economics Program or, Master of Science in Economics

The program is suitable for students with a bachelor's degree in Economics or equivalent. This master’s degree in economics will provide students a comprehensive knowledge of modern economics as an academic discipline. Students will be able to use theoretical and empirical methods to analyze economic problems and to plan and carry out a research project.

Completion of this degree will enhance the career potential of the graduates in economics as well as creates scope of research and higher study opportunities.

1.3 Aims or, Objectives of the Program

The aims of the master’s degree in economics are

  • To provide students a comprehensive knowledge of modern economics as an academic discipline.
  • To enable students to use the theoretical knowledge and empirical methods learned throughout the program in analyzing economic problems and to plan and carry out a research project.
    • Intended Learning Outcomes of the Program

After having completed the master’s degree, program students should will be able to:

  • Understand an advanced level about the complex economics mechanism that characterizes modern society.
  • Acquire in depth knowledge about economic theory regarding the utilization and allocation of resources, including labor, natural resources and capital.
  • Recognize in which way the economy is influenced by economic policy, technological advances and demographic conditions.
  • Analyze of how markets for goods and services function and how income is generated and distributed. Such analyses may have a national and international perspective, and a time frame that may be either short-term (business-cycles and crises) or long term (economic growth).
  • Formulate mathematical economic models, as well as how to quantify model parameters from data from Bangladesh or other countries.
  • Use of econometric- and mathematical methods.
  • Get the insight into special fields of economics, like energy economics, industrial economics, financial markets, environmental and resource economics, development economics and international trade and globalization.
  • Conduct research work under supervision of the expert.

 

  1. Admission Requirements for Master’s Program

Admission requirements for M. Sc. in Economics Program:

  • At least a Second Class in a three-year Bachelor degree or CGPA of 2.50 in a four-year Bachelor degree in Economics. Or
  • A four-year Bachelor degree in either Mathematics or Statistics, or Agricultural Economics, or Home Economics, or Health Economics (Minimum CGPA 2.5). or other relevant Bachelor degree in which it is required to complete some additional preparatory courses (minimum CGPA 2.5). Preparatory courses could be waived on the completion relevant courses in bachelor level.
  • GPA of at least 2.50 or 2nd Division in both the SSC and the HSC or equivalent examinations; or GPA of at least 2.00 either in the SSC or the HSC examination, but the total GPA in both the examinations combined must be at least 6.00; or
  • 'O ' Level with at least 5 subjects and 'A' Level with at least 2 subjects. In these two examinations out of 7 (seven) subjects, a student must have passed 4 (four) subjects with at least B grade or GPA of 4.00 and in 3 (three) subjects with in at least C grade or GPA of 3.5.
  • North American High School Diploma or International Baccalaureate, or its equivalent.
  • In case of sons/daughters of Freedom Fighters, a total GPA of at least 5.00 in both the SSC and the HSC Examinations. But the official proof of the Father /Mother as a Freedom Fighter must be submitted.
  1. Admission Procedure for M. Sc in Economics Program:

Admission form and prospectus are available in the admission office/ reception desk. After verification of the necessary documents, the applicants are allowed to deposit the admission fees and sign on the application form to complete the admission process.

The following documents are needed at the time of admission:

  • Two passport size color photographs (studio lab print with white background for ID card purpose).
  • Photocopies of SSC/O-Level, HSC/A-Level, Bachelor degree or equivalent examination certificates and mark sheets/transcripts and birth certificate/ national ID card (one copy each).
  • Original certificates, mark sheets/transcripts and birth certificate /national ID card must be provided for verification by the officer of BUBT in charge of admission.

  1. Structure of the Program

The M.Sc. in Economics at BUBT is a full time evening program. This is a sixteen-month program consisting of four semesters of thirteen weeks duration. Students will be required to complete 12 courses consisting of thirty-six credit hours and a project work, equivalent to 3 credits, on one of the selected areas. A faculty supervisor will guide the students in doing the project work and writing the report.

 

  1. Duration of the Program

The graduate program M.Sc. in Economics is comprised with a total of 39 credit hours. The graduate students have to complete 4 semesters and each semester has a length of 4 months. Therefore, a minimum of 1 year and 4 months is needed to complete the graduate program for each of the students. The minimum duration of the program is three semesters or one year for course work and one more semester for completing the Project Work.

 

  1. Organizational Framework (Academic Calendar)

The academic year begins from October and runs through September of the following year. An academic year is divided into the following three semesters:

  1. Duration of the Semester

The semester duration is usually 15 weeks or 4 months. In each semester, the Mid-Term examination and the Final Examinations of all departments of this university are organized centrally. The time period of a semester is distributed as follows:

The academic calendar is followed strictly. There is no delay in starting or finishing a semester.

 

  1. Course Registration System for a Semester

All the courses are offered sequentially by the department of economics before starting a new semester. Each student has to register the courses for the upcoming/ next semester immediately after the result publication and before starting the next semester.

8.1 Course loads per Semester

Normal course load for a student is maximum 12 credit hours per semester.   If a student obtains CGPA above 3.00 out of 4 CGPA scale, he/she may be allowed to take an extra course as ‘Retake’ or for ‘Improvement’ from the courses registered/ studied in the previous semesters. No one is allowed to register more than 4 courses if he/she get CGPA below 3.00. There is no option to take advance course/s as extra load. If anyone fail to take a course when it was offered (or failed or dropped but this course is not offered in running semester) can take that course as SSM (Self Study Mode) by consulting with his/her instructor.

8.2   Course and Credit Distribution over the Academic Years 

At least 39 credit hours including core and elective courses have to be completed by a student to obtain master degree in Economics. The students of M.Sc. in Economics program are required to complete 8 core and 4 elective courses (out of a total of 7 elective courses available in the program) of which each course is of 3 credit hours. In the 4th (final) semester they have to complete a project work equivalent to 3 credit hours. Each student has to register for a project work supervised by a teacher on a specific topic and at the final stage of project work the student has to face a defense on his or her work.
